Congratulations on your new tattoo! The artist’s part of the job is over; now it’s your turn to make sure your tattoo turns out perfectly. By following these simple instructions, the healing process should be quick and easy.

  • Keep the bandage on for 2-4 hours after getting tattooed. You may sleep with it on if your appointment ended during evening/night time hours. Always make sure your hands are cleaning when dealing with your tattoo. Gently rinse off all ointment, plasma, and blood. Wash the tattoo with unscented antibacterial soap; avoid soaps with exfoliating beads or fragrances. Pat dry with clean paper towel, then gently apply a very small amount of Aquaphor.

  • Clean your tattoo one to two times a day in the shower as described in the method above. Apply a light layer of Aquaphor one to three times a day for the first 5-7 days, or until your tattoo starts to flake or peel. When peeling begins, you may switch to a fragrance free moisturizing lotion (such as Lubriderm) for an additional two weeks. Your tattoo should be completely healed within 2-4 weeks. If your tattoo is in an area that bends/folds frequently, do your best to keep the area straight the first few days after the procedure.

  • Do not pick or scratch at your tattoo. If you notice your skin breaking out, reduce the application of your daily lotion. No sun, swimming or soaking for 2 full weeks after getting tattooed. After your tattoo is fully healed, sunscreen is recommended to preserve the integrity of the tattoo ink.
